Sar has been carving for more than 40 years.

He is now offers custom profile spoons, expanding on his signature style of reading the grain and finding the hidden form within the wood. He meticulously hand-hollows and smooths every bowl. The handle rises into a distinct profile—forehead, nose, lips, chin—carved with the patience and eye of someone who has spent a lifetime working in wood.
Because no two pieces of wood are the same, no two profiles are identical; that is entirely the point. These unique creations make remarkable gifts for milestones—graduations, retirements, anniversaries, memorials, or new babies. As conversation pieces, they live on a kitchen wall or in a display stand and tell a story every time someone asks about them.

Why Buy?

Sarkanys Rising is a veteran-owned functional art studio based in Tucson, Arizona, where Sar  acts as the primary craftsman. He ensures every piece leaves his hands before it leaves our studio. To start your custom order, please provide a photo that meets these requirements:
  • Show the subject in true profile: Ensure the face is facing directly left or right, not at an angle.
  • Ensure clear lighting: The edge of the face must be clearly visible, with no strong shadows (please see the image in our gallery).
  • Provide sharp focus: We cannot carve blurry photos accurately.
  • Submit a JPG or PNG file: Maximum file size is 1MB.

The Process:

Please note that we do not begin carving for 3 days to allow for photo review. Sar will review your photo within 2–3 business days and contact you if issues exist. Once carving begins, the order cannot be cancelled or refunded. Please allow 3–5 weeks for completion. A photo of your finished spoon will be sent before we ship it.
  • You will receive an order confirmation once full payment is processed.
  • Sar reviews your photo within 2–3 business days and contacts you if clarification is needed.
  • Carving begins only after photo approval—please allow 3–5 weeks for completion.
  • A photo of the finished piece will be sent before shipment.
  • This is a custom order—cancellations after carving are not accepted.

FAQ:

Can I submit a photo of someone who has passed away?

Yes. Memorial portrait spoons are among the most meaningful pieces Rex makes. Any clear profile photograph — whether recent or decades old — can be used as long as the profile edge is visible.

What if my photo is slightly angled?

Sar will do his best to work with what you send, but a true profile gives the sharpest result. If the photo cannot be used as-is, we will contact you before carving begins.

Can I choose the wood?

We will do our best to accommodate preferences. Current available wood species are noted at time of order. Reclaimed and sustainable woods are used whenever possible.

Is the spoon functional?

Yes. The bowl is hand-hollowed and food-safe finished. The spoon can be used or displayed.

Can I order more than one?

Yes. Each spoon is a separate order. Discounts may be available for multiple pieces — contact us to discuss.
