Handcrafted Flat Spoon | Cawl Spoon | Reclaimed Hardwood Kitchen Spoon
There is a kind of spoon that has fed families for centuries — flat, versatile, and perfectly balanced in the hand. The Welsh called it a cawl spoon. Rex calls it one of his favorites to make.
Each flat spoon is hand-carved from reclaimed hardwood recovered from Rex's workshop scraps — wood that would otherwise be lost, given new purpose and a long second life. No two pieces share the same grain pattern, color, or character. What you receive is genuinely one of a kind.
At 6 to 8 inches long, these spoons are ideal for soups, stews, sauces, and anything that benefits from a flat edge that can reach every corner of a pan. The broad working end glides smoothly along the bottom of a pot; the tapered handle fits naturally in the hand whether you're left- or right-handed.
Every spoon is finished with our own Wood Butter — a simple blend of food-grade beeswax and mineral oil that Rex and Dawn mix in the workshop. It conditions the wood, enhances the grain, and creates a surface that is safe for all food contact. To keep your spoon at its best, simply re-apply Wood Butter every few months, or whenever the wood looks or feels dry.
Each spoon is a working kitchen tool, a piece of functional art, and a small connection to a craft tradition that stretches back long before factory-made cookware. Rex has been working wood for over 40 years. It shows.
