Intensely: A Candlelit Wood Carving

Some pieces of art reveal themselves slowly. This padauk and oak carving is one of them. It looks beautiful in daylight, but candlelight transforms it. Sar carved this piece specifically for low light. He shaped recesses and relief work that catch a flame’s flicker. This design distributes light through the warm red grain of padauk in ways that photographs can barely capture.

Padauk is one of the most visually striking hardwoods in Sar's material palette. It features a deep, vivid rust-red that shifts toward burgundy and amber depending on the angle and light. Furthermore, Sar paired it with the creamy, open grain of oak. Consequently, the two woods create a natural contrast that the carving's design intentionally amplifies, creating a conversation between light and shadow planes across the surface.

This is not a decorative object that sits quietly in a corner. Instead, it demands attention, especially once the room dims and a candle is placed near it. The illuminated effect is the point. Sar designed this piece to perform in firelight, and it does.

Sar handcrafted this piece entirely in the Sarkanys Rising workshop in Tucson, Arizona, using over 40 years of experience. Because of the natural materials, no two pairings of padauk and oak are identical. Therefore, the grain patterns and color variations in this piece are entirely unique.
