Intensely: A Candlelit Wood Carving
Some pieces of art reveal themselves slowly. This padauk and oak carving is one of them — beautiful in daylight, transformed by candlelight. Rex carved this piece with the light source in mind, shaping recesses and relief work that catch the flicker of a flame and distribute it through the warm red grain of padauk in ways that photographs can barely capture.
Padauk is one of the most visually striking hardwoods in Rex's material palette: a deep, vivid rust-red that shifts toward burgundy and amber depending on the angle and the light hitting it. Paired with the creamy, open grain of oak, the two woods create a natural contrast that the carving's design intentionally amplifies — light planes and shadow planes in conversation across the surface.
This is not a decorative object that sits quietly in a corner. It demands a certain kind of attention, especially once the room dims and a candle is placed near it. The illuminated effect is the point — Rex designed this piece to perform in firelight, and it does.
Handcrafted entirely in the Sarkanys Rising workshop in Tucson, Arizona, by a veteran craftsman with over 40 years of woodworking experience. No two pairings of padauk and oak are identical; the grain patterns and color variations in this piece are entirely natural and entirely unrepeatable.
A statement piece for a living room mantel, a dining room sideboard, or any space that deserves something that earns its place on the wall or shelf. Makes a remarkable housewarming, anniversary, or collector's gift
